Product families

Pick the license for what you run

Each family is licensed differently. Choose by workload, then confirm the unit (core, user or device) and minimums with the licensing desk.

Windows Server

Operating system licensing for physical servers and virtualization hosts, sold as core packs.

  • Per core
  • Standard & Datacenter

Office LTSC

Fixed-version desktop suites for dedicated, offline or tightly controlled PC fleets.

  • Per device
  • LTSC 2024 / 2021

SQL Server

On-premises database licensing for line-of-business applications and reporting workloads.

  • Per core
  • Standard & Enterprise

CALs

Client Access Licenses for every user or device that connects to your Windows Server services.

  • User or device
  • Needed with Server
Financial analysis

When perpetual licensing lowers long-term cost

The right model depends on how long you will keep the software. Compare the total cost across your expected lifetime, not just the first year.

Predictable long-term cost

A subscription keeps billing for as long as you use it. A perpetual license is paid once, so keeping the same version for several years can cost less in total. Run the numbers for your own timeline.

Isolated & offline networks

Industrial, healthcare and other controlled networks often have limited internet access. Perpetual licenses can be activated by phone or through an internal KMS host, without a continuous cloud connection.

Fixed version stability (LTSC)

Long-Term Servicing Channel releases stay on a defined feature set during their support lifecycle, so there are no surprise interface changes that disrupt training. Lifecycle length varies by product.

Built for on-premises hardware

Ideal when you own the server. Pair core packs and CALs with your physical hardware and virtualization plan.

Reassignment options

Volume Licensing perpetual licenses generally include transfer rights for hardware refreshes, subject to Microsoft’s terms. OEM licenses stay with their original hardware.

No renewal deadlines

There is no renewal date that can interrupt service. Plan for the version’s support end date and budget for upgrades when you decide to move.

Sizing guide

How to size Windows Server licensing

Three quick steps to estimate what you need before requesting a quote.

01

Count physical cores

License every physical core on the server. Minimums are 8 core licenses per processor and 16 per server.

02

Choose the edition

Standard covers up to 2 VMs per license set. Datacenter covers unlimited VMs on the licensed host.

03

Add CALs

Add a User or Device CAL for each person or device accessing the server, plus RDS CALs for remote desktop.

Example: a server with two 16-core processors has 32 physical cores. License it with a 16-core base pack plus eight 2-core add-on packs, choose Standard or Datacenter based on how many VMs you will run, then add CALs for your users or devices. Not sure? Send us the specs and we will size it for you.
Choose the right licensing route

Perpetual vs. Subscription vs. Hosted

Microsoft sells software through different models. Pick the one that matches how you will use it.

Perpetual (1-time)
Subscription (CSP)
Hosted (SPLA)

Monthly, usage-based
Best for
Your own on-premises servers and PCs
Cloud services like Microsoft 365
Hosting software for other customers

Important: This comparison is a general guide, not legal advice or a licensing determination. Microsoft Product Terms and your agreement take precedence. Ask for a licensing review if you plan to host for customers, run in a shared environment, or mix license types.
A clearer path to deployment

From order to activated server

Delivery details and timing should be confirmed with OBHost for your order.

01

Size your needs

Identify the product, version, core count, VM plan and the users or devices that need access.

02

Order or request a quote

Buy online, or request a bulk or hardware-paired price for larger deployments.

03

Receive your keys

Get your license details and activation keys for the products you ordered.

04

Activate & keep records

Activate with MAK or KMS and keep your proof of license for future audits.

Eligibility guide

Is a perpetual license right for you?

Perpetual licensing suits organizations that own their hardware and keep software for years.

Perpetual is a good fit if you…

  • Own physical servers and plan to keep them for several years
  • Run isolated, air-gapped or limited-connectivity networks
  • Want a fixed version without feature changes (LTSC)
  • Prefer a one-time purchase over recurring subscription fees

Consider another model if you…

  • Host Microsoft software for third-party customers (use SPLA)
  • Want Microsoft 365 or cloud services for staff (use CSP)
  • Need the newest versions automatically as they release
  • Are unsure which model applies and want advice first

Before you order, have this ready

With these details we can quote the right packs and CALs faster.

  1. Product & version such as Windows Server 2022 or Office LTSC 2024.
  2. Physical cores and number of processors in each server.
  3. VM plan: how many virtual machines you will run.
  4. Users or devices that need CALs or Office licenses.
  5. License type: OEM with new hardware, or volume for reassignable use.
  6. Activation method: MAK, KMS or offline phone activation.
Bare-metal hardware pairing

Buying a new physical server?

Pair your Windows Server license with a new dedicated server. Ask the licensing desk about OEM and volume options for your hardware. Availability depends on the product and supplier.

Enterprise & volume licensing

Not sure which license you need?

Share your product, core count, VM plan and number of users or devices. The OBHost team will recommend the right licenses and prepare a volume quote.

FAQ knowledge base

Perpetual licensing FAQs

Answers on core minimums, virtualization limits, CALs and activation keys.

Consult a specialist

All physical cores in a server must be licensed. The minimum is 8 core licenses per physical processor and 16 core licenses per physical server. For example, a server with two 16-core CPUs (32 cores) needs a 16-core base pack plus eight 2-core add-on packs. Always confirm the current rules for your edition before ordering.

When all physical cores are licensed, Standard permits up to 2 operating system environments (VMs) per license set, with additional sets needed for more VMs. Datacenter permits unlimited VMs on the fully licensed host, which makes it the usual choice for dense virtualization and private clouds.

Yes. In the Server + CAL model, each user or device that accesses services such as file sharing, Active Directory, DNS or printing needs a CAL. User CALs suit staff who use several devices; Device CALs suit shared terminals, such as shift workers on one PC. Remote Desktop access needs separate RDS CALs.

A Multiple Activation Key (MAK) activates each machine against Microsoft’s activation service, online or by phone, using a fixed activation count. A Key Management Service (KMS) host activates systems inside your own network, and clients periodically renew with that host. KMS has minimum client thresholds, so it suits larger environments.

Volume Licensing perpetual licenses generally include transfer rights that let you reassign a license to another server, subject to Microsoft’s waiting period between reassignments. OEM licenses are tied to the original hardware they were installed on. Check the specific license terms before planning a hardware refresh.

A perpetual license covers the specific version you buy. Moving to a newer release normally needs a new license or Software Assurance. Security updates follow Microsoft’s support lifecycle for that product, so check the end-of-support date before you buy.

Perpetual is a one-time purchase for your own on-premises use. CSP is a recurring cloud subscription such as Microsoft 365. SPLA is the monthly service-provider model for hosting Microsoft software for other customers. Perpetual licenses are not intended for hosting third parties. Use the switcher at the top of this page to compare the three.

Send the product and version, the number of physical cores or processors, the number of VMs you plan to run, how many users or devices need access, and whether the server is new hardware or an existing one. With that, the licensing team can quote the right packs and CALs.
